Facilitator Note:
The key to this session is to ensure you do not get in the way of those who are clear on what they want to do and have a solid plan, and to support the young people who are struggling.
Say: “Last time, you chose the Project Planet Love you want to take forward and started planning how you could make it happen.”
“Today, we're moving from planning to action.”
“As we have today and next week’s workshop to pull things together, I first want to get a sense of where everyone is at and who needs additional support.”
Part 1: Project Pulse | 3 mins
Bring the Ambassadors into their Project Planet Love teams and ask them to take out their Project Planet Love Planning Sheet.
Ask each team to quickly decide:
We know what we're doing and can start.
We know what we're doing, but something is getting in our way.
Our project is unclear, too big, or we don't know how to make it happen.
Identify your Red and Amber teams immediately.
Support Red teams first, then Amber.
Green teams start working. Do not make them wait.
Part 2: Get Ready to Act | 5 mins
Ask the green and amber teams to briefly check their plan against four questions: Pull them up on a slide whilst you are supporting those who flagged red.
What are we going to do? - Can we explain it simply?
What can we realistically achieve? - What can we actually make happen in the time we have?
Who is doing what? - Does everyone have a role?
What do we need? - Do we need materials, information, permission, people, or support?
Ask teams to add anything important to their PPL Planning Sheet.
Don't aim for perfect plans. If something is stopping a team from moving forward, possibly ask:
“What's getting in the way?”
“What could you do about that?”
“Who could help?”
“Could you make the idea smaller or simpler?”
Say: “That's enough planning. It's time to start. Take your first real action.”
Encourage teams to begin working on their projects now.
Move between teams as a project coach. Keep asking where needed:
“What are you doing right now?”
“What needs to happen next?”
“Who is doing that?”
“Is anything stopping you?”
“What do you need from us?”
If a team spends too long discussing, ask: “What could you actually start doing now?”
Don't send them back to the beginning. Shrink it.
Ask: “What is the most important part of your idea? What smaller version could you actually complete?”
Ask: “What can you do while you're waiting?”
Help them draft the email, prepare what they need to ask, or continue another part of the project.
Let them work. They don't need facilitator input simply because you're available.
Part 4: Lock In the Next Step | 3 mins
Call teams to pause. Ask each team to complete these four sentences: (Again, pull them up on a slide)
Today, we…
Next, we need to…
This is being done by…
Before the next workshop, we need...
Make sure these are recorded on their Project Planet Love Planning Sheet.
Close: “Today you moved from having a project idea to actually making it happen. Next time, we'll keep going.”
Link to Next Week’s Session | 2 mins
Share that next week, we are going to continue to focus on ensuring everyone has done the best they can to get their project ready. Remember, you can arrange to meet up around your lessons, as a team, to get this done.
Share what to expect from the Celebration so the Ambassadors can prepare. If you do not want to disturb the flow of events, you can share this towards the end of the session.
Explain that each project group will present their Project Planet Love to a live audience. The Celebration will be an exhibition, with each project having a ‘stall’ to share information. They will also have the option to perform from a stage if they prefer. Visitors may include parents, carers, teachers, and other community members (if applicable).
If some Ambassadors want to perform at the Celebration, tell them what to expect (e.g. whether they’ll perform on a stage or at their stall) and how to prepare (e.g. suggested length of their performance).
Also, let them know there is nothing stopping them from finding time in one of their breaks, outside of the sessions, to meet up and finish off their project or to prepare for their celebration presentation.
Note: See Celebration: Project Planet Love for detailed preparation tips for the event.
(Optional) Rehearsal Opportunities
Some Ambassadors may be ready to practise performing or presenting their work. If so, create space for them to rehearse in pairs, or small groups. Listeners should share positive feedback to encourage their peers before the Celebration.
Incorporate peer feedback into rehearsals, as desired.
This week we invite you to…
Take one small step towards your Project Planet Love.
You might:
Collect inspiration
Sketch an idea
Take a photograph
Research an issue
Talk to someone about your project
Gather materials
Visit a place connected to your project
Share a photo, drawing, note or update on the Community Hub showing one step you have taken towards bringing your Project Planet Love to life.
Offer the energy checkout.
Then close the session saying:
"Thank you for everything you brought to today's workshop, your ideas, your energy and the way you supported one another.”
"Have a brilliant week, and we'll see you next time."
